A casket is not required for cremation unless there is a public viewing of the body, in which case a cremation casket is necessary. If a casket is not chosen, Illinois law requires that the bodies of deceased individuals being cremated be enclosed in an “alternative container”, defined as a rigid, leak-proof, combustible container for the cremation process.
A Cremation Casket looks much like a burial casket but is made of all combustible materials. A Cremation Container is the minimum container which meets the legal requirements for an “alternative container”.
